July 4
Tomato hornworms, I'd rather not have to kill you. I do not relish the weight of the rock in my hand, the meaty squish, the suprising quantity of neon green guts squirting out onto the clay. Just keep away, ok?

On the right is Basil (so well behaved!). On the left is "Dad's Sunset" tomato with the hornworm damage. The top 1/3 is completely defoliated. I'm not sure if I should prune off those branches. There's no way to do that without cutting off the leader, so I think I'll just wait and see if any buds develop.

Tomato "Cosmonaut Volkov". All of the tomato plants have green tomatoes now. I'm sort of curious how the wet, cool weather this year will affect them. Last year was a tomato bonanza and we had the opposite weather.

Tomato "taxi" going for quantity, I guess.

Chard is ready to eat now! I made a sandwich of the first small batch. On the right, a variety of purple carrot (!). A lot of the seeds either didn't germinate, or, more likely, washed away in one of the many hard rainstorms we had that week. The ones that stuck around are now about one finger tall.

Squashes. Some big, some small. All so freaking adorable.

Summer squash and zucchini seem to be runty this year. They're in a slightly shadier spot, so maybe that's it. Or the rain? I don't know, but I'm in no hurry to be eating zucchini pancakes and zucchini chocolate cake and zucchini smoothies et cetera...

And the cukes...
Uh, it's raining again. Happy 4th of July, everyone!
