It's been a warm fall, but the tomatoes have been fading for a while now, and the peppers just this week started to wilt. Once we get a real frost, we'll eat the last of the beets (they're supposed to sweeten in the cold) and then there will be only chard.

Tonight, the air smelled like frost. So I packed a big bag with all the green tomatoes, stuffed little eggplants and peppers in every coat pocket, and walked away.

Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

(Robert Frost)
