August 15, 2007:

Fall is coming, y'all. I know it doesn't seem like it when it's 95 degrees out, but lookie here:

pumpkin

Punkin' is turning orange. This li'l guy is just a bit smaller than a volleyball now. Yes, those ARE weeds growing under it. Thanks for asking.

pumpkin

Here's the long view. I found out just recently that in order to properly pollinate, you need at least 2 pumpkin plants. I have only one plant and one pumpkin, but really, how many pumpkins does a person need? Ask James sometime about the ugliest pumpkin ever (hint: it took me 6 months to eat!)

beets, shoots, and leaves

Next to the pumpkin, a brand new beet plant is popping up! It's about time-- I planted the seeds in June! We finally ate some of those earlier beets this week and they were FAB! Golden beets-- I highly recommend them.

dead cukes

Cukes are dying. Don't know if they were just naturally done, or if the cucumber beetles killed them, but I think everyone here is sick of eating cucumbers anyway.

kale bug

So I have these harlequin bugs on the kale plant. Here's a blurry close-up:

harlequin zoom

They are cool looking bugs, but apparently they are bad guys. The kale isn't tasty anyway, so I might just toss it.

celebrity

Celebrity tomatoes! Lately I've been giving tomatoes away at work and eating several a day myself. I'm quite proud of this surplus, though I can't honestly say that it was any talent of mine that got them to grow. 3 of the 7 plants are quite runty, so I think it's just luck.

sweet 100 overgrown

When you plant a little 4" tomato seedling in May, it seems a bit optimistic, cocky even, to put such a big cage around it. But now it's August and this spunky gal would be taller than me (5 foot 7!) if she were properly caged. As it is, she just spills over the top. Note the bricks keeping the cage from toppling over (or walking away?). Classy.

ichiban eggplant

Eggplant. "Next year, grow vegetables I like," James says. Like what? Cheerioplant? Icecreamplant?

peppers one last zuke?

See, I tried to grow bell peppers and they're all tiny, thin-walled, and sometimes rotten on the bottom. I must be doing something wrong. Ideas?

The zucchini and yellow squash seem to have slowed down considerably, so we might actually enjoy the last one or two.

OK, here's a bunch of sunflowers to send us off today...
